02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat in a large saucepan. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in a few drops of red gel food coloring until desired shade is reached. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until evenly coated. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in a few drops of blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - Sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the treats are still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • Three layers mean you get to taste the subtle shift from bold red to creamy vanilla to deep blue in one bite.
  • Kids actually want to help with this one, and watching their faces light up when the colors come together makes it worth every sticky hand moment.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential because liquid coloring will seize the marshmallow mixture into a grainy mess that refuses to cooperate.
  • Wiping your saucepan between layers seems like an extra step, but old marshmallow residue can streak your colors and create an uneven appearance.
03 -
  • A small pinch of salt scattered into the white layer makes the sweetness feel balanced rather than flat and one-dimensional.
  • If your gel coloring is old or you're struggling to get a deep color, add one extra drop at a time rather than dumping in a lot—patience with coloring always wins over guessing.
